The club runs beach sprints and flag training once a week at Dicky Beach for U10s and up. The club also encourages nippers to attend Chris Brearley’s Youth Sprint Fitness training sessions at Caloundra Primary School.
Dicky Beach commits to one Queensland Beach Series Carnival per year, held on the Sunshine Coast.
Competitors race 90 metres (70 metres for juniors) to the finish line on a straight sand course.
Teams of four compete on a 90-meter (70-meter for children) straight sand course with a baton, each running one lap. The winner’s team’s final runner crosses the finish line first.
Competitors run 1km or 2km races on a sand course.
Competitors begin by lying on their stomachs 15–20 metres away from a baton or batons placed in the sand. Batons are usually in short supply compared to competitors. At the sound of the starting pistol, contestants rise, turn, and sprint to grab a baton. The competitor(s) who do not obtain a baton are eliminated from the competition. The process is repeated until just one winner remains.
